About the author

Dr Charl van Loggerenberg is an emergency medicine specialist who graduated from Wits University Medical School in Johannesburg, South Africa in the year Nelson Mandela walked to freedom. He trained at the busiest trauma units in the world including Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital. His postgraduate medical qualifications include a diploma in primary emergency care and a specialist Fellowship of the College of Emergency Medicine of South Africa. He has held numerous instructor and teaching positions and been involved with educating 1000’s of doctors, nurses, paramedics and students. He has worked in academic medicine, pre-hospital emergency medical services (EMS), hospital groups, medical assistance and remote medical services over a 25 year professional career. He is currently general manager of emergency medicine at the coolest hospital group in South Africa. He has been expert medical consultant to the mining industry, media industry, aviation industry and travelled the world to do so. He has 1000’s of mission hours on emergency medical helicopters and mercy flights, and has established clinics on remote tropical islands, in deserts (like with camels and palm trees yes) and deep in the jungles of central Africa. He also holds a diploma in business management and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Wits. He is married (to a famous surgeon) and has three whizzkid children. Outside of work he does endurance triathlon and enjoys cooking.
